Together, they made breakfast. He tended to the bacon while she made pancakes. When he was finished, he used the bacon grease to fry eggs. While the two of them cooked, they said little. They danced around each other in the small kitchen, smiling, touching each other unnecessarily, her hand on his shoulder, him touchingâbrieflyâher waist.
She was barefoot and wearing a pair of sweatpants and a Reno Aces T-shirt. She wore no bra underneath, and her breasts pressed against the fabric, her nipples hard in the chilly air. Ethan tried not to look.
The blinds were pulled back from the windows, and outside the dark had been replaced by the bright light of sunrise.
When they sat down to eat, Whitney asked Ethan what his next step was.
âIâve got to get that ledger,â he said. âSomehow.â
âHow about I get it for you?â
âNo. Thank you, but no.â Ethan already felt like he was putting her in danger by being in her apartment. He didnât want to involve her any further.
âItâs the only way,â she said.
âIâll find another.â
He opened his mouth to protest, but she launched into her plan. Shark would likely be looking for Ethan at the funeral, which would leave his office at the club unattended. Even after what Ethan had pulled last night, the funeral should be safe. Shark might attempt to talk to Ethan, but he wouldnât try to hurt himâhe would have to know the police and the FBI might be watching. They could be undercover or at least spying on the proceedings. Meanwhile, Whitney would go to the club and sneak into Sharkâs office. It made more sense for her to do it. No one would think twice about her being there.
âAs long as the ledgerâs there,â she said, âIâll get it. Letâs just hope he doesnât keep it with him all the time.â
It seemed like a decent plan, but Ethan didnât like the idea of putting Whitney at risk.
âIâm not going to the funeral now,â Ethan said. âI donât have time for that.â
What he didnât say was that he wouldnât miss his sisterâs funeral for anything if it actually felt like her funeral. But he didnât see the point of standing next to an empty casket. Finding out what happened to her was the only way to get any closure.
âYou have to go to the funeral,â Whitney said. âThatâs the whole reason they let you out. It will raise all sorts of red flags if you miss it.â
âIt will look suspicious if youâre not there,â Ethan said.
âNot as suspicious as you not being there,â she said. âAnd you canât just walk into the club and ask for the ledger. Even if Sharkâs not there, Stu will be. Or Bruce. Or both.â
Ethan sat back. Much of his food sat uneaten on his plate. Theyâd made enough for four people, but heâd lost his appetite and had to force himself to eat what little he did.
âWeâll get you a cell phone,â Whitney said. âA prepaid one. So we can communicate.
